Baguettes that taste good and do good

Sustainability at UC - baguettes in counter

Now, we know we might have enticed you in by the smell of our freshly baked baguettes or maybe it was just our witty personality – but we’re just not a pretty face. We, along with so many others, are trying our best to move towards making the planet a slightly better place to live in.

Our actions affect you at the end of the day, so here are just a few ways you can count on us to support more sustainable practices and to responsibly source ingredients.

Happy hens

100% of our eggs are laid by hens that can run, fly and perch and are produced in small flocks on family run farms. It’s really important that our girls can exhibit their natural behaviours by dust bathing, perching, and socialising in safe and airy buildings, making healthy, happy hens. The perfect environment, and ensuring the birds have the very best nutrition and management, enables all our hens to be healthy and productive. We provide additional enrichment by playing music within the buildings, providing fresh litter regularly to enhance dustbathing and our team of staff regularly walking the birds to ensure good social interaction.

Nothing fishy here

Our fish and seafood is certified against recognised standards such as Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standards. They both place immense importance on the traceability and sustainability of fish and seafood. Click on either of the links to find out more about them individually.

Fairs fair

How much tea do Britons drink a day? Actually, it would take too long to count. Tea, coffee and even hot chocolate at Upper Crust are certified against recognised standards like Fairtrade, the Rainforest Alliance or the Ethical Tea Partnership. You have probably heard of them already but these guys make sure that everyone who contributes to the cultivating and growing of these products are fairly paid, has good working environments and are adopting sustainable practises. No doubt, you’ll want to continue with your commuter coffee every morning, so we know it’s important to get these accreditations.

Walking off that carbon footprint

We’ve partnered with Klimato, a carbon footprinting company, to help us understand the biggest contributors to our overall food emissions, right down to specific ingredients. We’re now using these insights to evolve our recipes for the better… We can actively choose ingredients that help lessen that impact… it might go a little way in offsetting your favourite pop star’s private jet journeys… (sorry, not sorry).

Too Good To Go

Remember when everyone couldn’t get enough of Too Good To Go bags? It’s more than just a viral moment for us. We work hard to make sure our stores are only buying and making what they need – our stock levels are meticulously managed, but sometimes we have a few bits left over. We pop them in one bag, upload to the Too Good To Go app for you to pick up for a fantastically discounted price. Still perfect for an evening meal or treat, and it means you aren’t buying extra ingredients in your local supermarket. This is a great way to stop us binning a perfectly good product and saves you cash in the meantime. Now that’s a step in the right direction.
